Prologue
Isn't it ironic that the Church has been so impactful at overseas mission work, while at the same time being quite disconnected from their own neighborhoods? It's time for us to move toward mission in our neighborhoods. Second Stories facilitates events for groups of all shapes and sizes to get hands-on experience of neighborhood community development activities and exposure to our training. We host these groups, putting them to work with our partners as a model for our participants to take home with them. The goal is to have our visitors adopt this model and implement it in their own contexts. These experiences deepen the transferability of our training with the result being deeper ministry impacts in neighborhoods.
This program is called Prologue; it is the beginning, the prologue to a missioning life. It mixes hands on opportunities through our partnerships with theological training to serve and spread goodwill in the neighborhoods. The participants get involved with our partners such as ROSE Community Development, a low-income housing management group, and Portland Parks and Recreation where we serve lunches to kids and engage in crafts and athletic games fostering healthy lifestyles. From serving the homeless, to passing out lunches and leading crafts and games at local parks, the participants of Prologue learn a great deal about how to live with greater connectedness to their communities at the same time they are enriching the neighborhoods of SE Portland.
